Once floating in a pool, a woman in labour can move unencumbered. The water bears some of her weight, and she has the sense of being in her own private world within the margins of her pool. The result is that she moves spontaneously in a way that is common in a wide range of birth cultures.
Sheila Kitzinger - "Rediscovering Birth"
"Introducing a deep pool of water to the birthing room is a way to make your labour shorter, easier, and more comfortable. It increases your sense of privacy and helps to make your baby's entry into the world gentle and free from trauma, whether the birth occurs in or beside the pool."
Janet Balaskas - "Water Birth"
We have found that lying in warm water helps women to relax and feel less pain. The pool easily allows two people freedom of movement. Women can immerse themselves in it completely without fear.
Michel Odent - "Birth Reborn"
An Active Birth is the way that a woman behaves when she is following her own instincts and the physiological logic of her body.
You're in control of your body, rather than the passive recipient of an 'actively managed' birth on the part of your attendants
Janet Balaskas - 'New Active Birth'
A strong intention, relaxed body and an open mind are the main ingredients for an Active Birth.
